It was a great day for football: sunny, high-60s, a light breeze blowing. And a new starting quarterback blew into the program.

Tyrod Taylor put on an amazing show with his feet, his arm, and his mind. The Hokies moved the ball well in the first half, but had trouble finishing the deal. By the second half, the Ohio defense was sufficiently worn down and allowed the Hokies to score three more touchdowns, all rushing TDs.

Apple calls this a rebate? You get $100 to spend on Apple stuff. This means that the credit is really only a rebate of about $30. Plus who knows, maybe you'll buy other over-priced Apple stuff.

According to Jobs; statement, customers who bought an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T Inc. will be eligible for $100 credit they can use at either Apple's retail or online store.

I received just such an invite. I went and looked at the site and thought it was pretty much not worth it. I couldn't even see what my profile might look like if I signed up, couldn't do anything at all without signing up (as far as I could tell).

So, if you get a Quechup invite from me, it's because they hacked one of my other social networks, because I'm definitely not going to join them!

Flock 0.9.1 is Out

One thing I've noticed that's a huge improvement: when I click a link inside an e-mail in Microsoft Outlook, Outlook no longer displays an annoying modal dialog (even though the link loaded just fine).

Now focus goes to Flock and all is well!

Hilarious Panera Experience

Sitting in Panera Bread working, around lunch time. Two ladies come in and sit at the table next to me. They've got a cooler (yes, a cooler) and their "buzzer" for their order.

The buzzer buzzes, one of them goes to get their order and returns. A few minutes later, one of the managers walks over.

"You can't have that here," he says.

I'm assuming they've brought in a Coke or something. I look over and see that the older of the two has popped open a bottle of Budweiser and poured it into a clear Panera cup, leaving the bottle sitting on the table.

The women seemed surprised that they were asked to dispose of the beverage.

No, I'm not kidding. I wish I had had the guts to snap a picture of the scene.

I've been trying to flag down the manager to ask just what the BYOB policy is here. :)

This is totally insane...

Even if he does not sell the ball, Murphy would still owe the taxes based on a reasonable estimate of its value, according to John Barrie, a tax lawyer with Bryan Cave LLP in New York. Capital gains taxes also could be levied in the future as the ball gains value, he said.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A man with severe brain injuries who spent six years in a near-vegetative state can now chew his food, watch a movie and talk with family thanks to a brain pacemaker that may change the way such patients are treated, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old man is the first person in a minimally conscious state to be treated with deep-brain stimulation, a treatment that uses a pacemaker and two electrodes to send impulses into a part of the brain regulating consciousness.

The U.S. Census has new statistics out — and they show that the numbers of single-person businesses are booming. There are now over 20 million such businesses, based on the most recently available data as of 2005.

To be exact, the United States has 20,392,068 single-person businesses. In the space of three years, 2.7 million more people became the owner of a “business of one.”

For the past three years the number of single-person businesses has grown each year between 4% and 5%. That means the single-person businesses grow faster than the rate of growth of the U.S. population as a whole (which grows at about 1% a year according to the U.S. Census).

These single-person businesses account for 78% of ALL U.S. businesses. You know those millions of small businesses that everyone is always talking about? Well, the majority of them fall into this category of single-person business.

These single-person businesses bring in over $951 billion (US) in annual receipts or sales to the U.S. economy.

Fired Up About Flock!

I'm an unpaid, unofficial Microsoft evangelist. Call me a fanboy or whatever, I just don't care about your opinion of me (but that's completely beside the point).

I'm extremely happy being on Vista Ultimate, I think it's a great operating system if you've got the machine to support it. Yes, I had to upgrade my laptop to 2G of RAM due to the development environments that I run. Big deal, well worth the $180 bucks.

I'm also enamored with IE7. Great browser, nice features, simplified interface.

But I gotta tell you, in just a few short hours of working with it I've fallen head-over-heels in love with Flock 0.9.0. The features I love most:

The search box and the auto-detection of search boxes. It found search boxes just about everywhere (except at YubNub, for some reason). [UPDATE: The Install YubNub page points to a Firefox extension that works great]
Integration with del.icio.us and flickr
The blog editor rocks and was what led me to open this LiveJournal. Spell checking! I love it.
The feed reader looks really nice. But three complaints:

Can't seem to make unread posts go away. A filter would be nice.
No clue where to go to see how often the feeds are updated.
Feed Collections (aka folders) always have their label in bold. My peripheral vision tells me that this means there are unread posts in the collection. But that's not the case.

My World totally rocks! Both inside the browser and in real life, by the way.

So, go get Flock!
